The Climate Package, previously known as the Cold Weather Package, is standard this year on the XC70 and features new Rainsensor windshield wipers. Well-equipped option packages have always been popular with Volvo shoppers, and 2003 will be no different. This year the Volvo XC70 gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel and single disc in-dash CD audio system as standard equipment as well. Of course ABS braking, 4-wheel independent suspension and responsive rack and pinion steering are all standard. It's all done automatically and seamlessly. ![]() Additionally, there is no need for the driver to worry about engaging the system. The electronically controlled Haldex system reacts extremely quickly to wheel slip, routing power to the wheels with greater traction almost instantaneously, just one-seventh of a wheel rotation to be exact. Mating perfectly with the new engine for 2003 is the advanced Haldex all-wheel-drive system, which replaces the last year's viscous coupled all-wheel-drive unit. Teamed with this new engine is a standard 5-speed Geartronic transmission that allows either fully automatic or driver selectable gear changes. Also found in the all-new Volvo XC90 sport-utility vehicle, this engine produces 208 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and a stout 236 lb.-ft. This year the XC70 receives a wide array of performance and luxury enhancements including a new, more powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged engine. Underneath the CX-70 is Mazda’s new platform featuring a longitudinal engine layout, which in theory could enable both rear- and all-wheel drive-though all CX-70s will come standard with the latter. The plug-in-hybrid model is expected to share its powertrain with the CX-60, which offers a combined output of 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque and claims an electric driving range of 39 miles. The inline-six will likely be the same 340-horsepower, turbocharged 3.3-liter engine found in the CX-90, where it puts its power through a 48-volt hybrid system and an eight-speed automatic transmission. We think the CX-70 will offer a choice of either an inline-six gasoline engine with a 48-volt hybrid system or a plug-in-hybrid drivetrain with a 2.5-liter inline-four. Look for the plug-in-hybrid setup to cost a bit extra. All-wheel drive will be standard across the board, but we don’t know exactly which powertrain configurations will be standard and optional. Mazda is in the process of upgrading its range of crossovers and a new three-row model called the 2024 CX-90 will hit U.S. The CX-70 is an all-new SUV that slots in between the compact CX-50 and the three-row CX-9.
